Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the sponsorship of 180 postgraduate students to pursue advanced degrees in Malaysia and India, marking a significant investment in education and human capital development for the state.
The beneficiaries include 12 PhD and 53 master’s students enrolled at Sharda University, India, as well as 12 PhD and 73 master’s candidates at Integral University, India. Additionally, 29 others will pursue master’s and PhD programs at various universities in Malaysia.
Governor's Message to Beneficiaries
At a send-off ceremony held at the Government House in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum urged the scholars to focus on their studies and use the opportunity to contribute to the progress of Borno State.
“We expect you to demonstrate unwavering commitment to your studies and future careers. Your dedication will ensure that the education you receive translates into meaningful contributions to the development of our state,” Zulum said.
The governor also announced a monthly allowance of $150 for each beneficiary to support their upkeep during their studies abroad. He emphasized that nearly ₦2 billion would be spent annually on tuition fees alone.
“With great opportunities come great responsibilities. The government has invested heavily in your education, and we trust that you will use this privilege to make a positive impact on society,” he added.
Automatic Employment for Graduates
Governor Zulum assured beneficiaries of automatic employment upon their return. He stated that some of them would be recruited to teach at tertiary institutions within the state, further strengthening its educational system.
“Those pursuing master’s degrees should consider obtaining a PhD where possible. I have directed the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to collaborate with our tertiary institutions to ensure immediate employment for returning scholars,” the governor announced.
Educational Investment
The Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, highlighted that the 180 beneficiaries would study STEM-related courses in India and Malaysia.
He also revealed that ₦1.99 billion had been allocated for tuition fees for the international scholarships, while an additional ₦338.5 million was approved for local scholarships benefiting 303 students.
This initiative underscores Governor Zulum’s commitment to prioritizing education and creating opportunities for youth development in Borno State.
