The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has launched a teacher training program aimed at enhancing pupils' literacy and numeracy skills across six local government areas in the state.
The program, Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy, helping pupils learn to read and write effectively. Pupils are grouped based on their literacy levels, progressing from alphabet identification to word formation and sentence reading.
SUBEB's Efforts to Address Literacy Gaps
Speaking at the workshop, SUBEB Acting Chairman Mubarak Muhammad emphasized the urgent need to address literacy gaps among pupils.
“The program is essential due to the large number of pupils in Kaduna who cannot read or write. Teachers must use this opportunity to improve their teaching skills,” he said.
Muhammad thanked Governor Uba Sani for approving the program and reaffirmed SUBEB’s commitment to raising the standard of education in the state.
Expanding the Training
The initiative is being implemented in six local governments: Igabi, Kaduna North, Zaria, Lere, Sanga, and Jema’a. SUBEB plans to extend the training to more areas in the near future.
Teachers' Welfare and Productivity
The Acting Chairman also assured participants that SUBEB is working with the state government to enhance teachers’ welfare, recognizing its importance in boosting productivity and improving learning outcomes.
The program marks a significant step in Kaduna State’s efforts to improve education and empower teachers to provide quality learning for pupils.
